SNÖBAHN has emerged as a disruptive force in action sports training, offering a year-round, accessible, & safe environment for athletes of all levels. We examine SNÖBAHN’s innovative approach, highlighting its cutting-edge facilities, strategic partnerships, & commitment to athlete safety, particularly focusing on the crucial role of MaxAir Trampolines in mitigating risk & maximizing performance. SNÖBAHN’s model demonstrates a paradigm shift in snow & freestyle park training, democratizing access to these sports & shaping the future of athlete development.

Traditional snow sports training presents significant barriers to entry, including geographical limitations, seasonal constraints, & substantial financial investment. SNÖBAHN addresses these challenges by bringing world-class training facilities to urban environments, offering a year-round solution for athletes to hone their skills. This case study explores how SNÖBAHN, in partnership with key industry players–California Skateparks, SkiMachine, BigAirBag & MaxAir–is transforming the landscape of action sports training.

Founded in 2016 by Sadler Merrill, SNÖBAHN was conceived to connect urban communities with snow sports opportunities. The recent partnership with three-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White & his company, Unrivaled Sports, has further propelled SNÖBAHN’s growth & influence.  The facility’s core philosophy centers on safe, progressive skill development, achieved through a combination of cutting-edge technology & expert coaching.

SNÖBAHN’s facility boasts a comprehensive suite of training elements designed to cater to a diverse range of athletes & disciplines, including freestyle skiing, snowboarding, BMX & skateboarding. These elements include a big air jump with a BigAirBag landing, which allows athletes to practice advanced maneuvers with reduced risk, providing a safe & controlled landing environment.  Performance trampolines, coupled with a BigAirBag, enable athletes to develop air awareness & refine complex aerial techniques.  Artificial Alpine slopes by SkiMachine simulate real-world skiing & snowboarding conditions, facilitating year-round practice.  Expert coaching is also available to guide athletes & provide personalized instruction.

SNÖBAHN’s success is underpinned by strategic collaborations with industry leaders. California Skateparks contributed to the design & construction of the facility, leveraging their extensive experience in skatepark development. SkiMachine provided state-of-the-art ski simulators, enhancing the training experience & allowing for precise skill refinement. MaxAir Trampolines supplied high-performance trampolines, ensuring a safe & effective training environment.  BigAirBag is a critical partner, providing custom-designed landing solutions that prioritize athlete safety & performance.

The city-centered locations remove the traditional barriers of cost & travel associated with mountain-based training. As Kevin English, CEO of Unrivaled Sports’ action sports division, articulates, SNÖBAHN reduces these barriers, making snow sports accessible to a wider audience. This accessibility fosters inclusivity & expands opportunities for aspiring athletes.

With the support of prominent figures like Shaun White & Bode Miller, & investment from firms like Ares Management, SNÖBAHN is poised for significant expansion.  The company’s innovative model is setting a new industry standard, proving that high-quality action sports training can be both safe & accessible.

SNÖBAHN represents a monumental shift in action sports training, offering a scalable & sustainable model for athlete development.  The company’s focus on safety, accessibility, & innovation, coupled with its strategic partnerships, positions it as a leader in the industry.  SNÖBAHN’s success underscores the importance of collaboration & technological advancement in shaping the future of action sports.

INSTALLATION: SNÖBAHN

In spring of 2023, Merrill approached the MaxAir Technical Team to help design the trampoline & gymnastic elements at the second SNÖBAHN location in the Denver suburb of Thornton, Colorado. This location is designed as 38,000 square feet of action sports training with 4 alpine automated ski slopes, a half-pipe, 2 dedicated skate runs, & another megaramp with a massive inflatable air bag at the end of it. With over a quadrant of space for a gymnastics & trampoline area, the designers on the MaxAir Technical Team went wild.

The MaxAir Technical Team was responsible for 3 competition-sized fly beds, 4 super trampolines, trampwalls, diving obstacle, spring floor, 3 skate park nets, a trampoline court containment net, & a host of carpet-bonded foam wraps across the entire facility from floor to ceiling.

The MaxAir Technical Team dispatched to handle the installation consisted of a 4-man squad led by Paul Hagan. Typically, trampoline installation is classified as finishing work. However, commercial construction doesn’t have the same non-constraints as residential builds. The team quickly pivoted to what could be done in the timeframe allotted, being sure to save adequate time for the true finishing work once the construction crews completed.

The trampoline courts were addressed first, & installing the frames into the concrete floor went unhindered. The trampoline beds were installed next so the squad had a level (if not bouncy) surface to work from. The carpet-bonded foam wrapping for the jumpwalls was handled next, followed by the shoulder-height parapet which separated the alpine ski machines from the trampolines.

Adjacent to the trampoline court, a spring floor was laid out along 2 more super trampolines which emptied into a large pit which was soon occupied by an inflatable air bag by BigAirBag. MaxAir Trampolines & BigAirBag have a great relationship working alongside each other on many park builds. On this occasion, both teams helped each other from assisting in air bag positioning to sharing bottled water reserves (Thanks, Nicky!). Once the end deck exit pads & drop down pit protectors were in place, the air bag could be dropped in & focus went to wrapping the spring floor & diving obstacle in carpet-bonded foam. While part of the MaxAir Technical Team handled the gymnastics area, the remaining team members hung the skate park nets & the trampoline court net.

The initial installation took 16 days with a week-long follow-up once the remaining construction crews had completed their build. MaxAir Trampolines finished their portion of the project a month prior to the park opening, to comply with all local & state compliance requirements & to pass inspections. SNÖBAHN opened on March 8, 2024.

We offer custom solutions that DEFY expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if space is limited?

We design custom-tailored trampoline units to fit into your unique space in addition to our standardized package kits. Our design team has the knowledge and first-hand experience to make your imagination come to life, especially if space is tight.

Once the trampoline arrives, who will install the trampoline?

You can install the trampoline yourself with our installation guides provided to you by the MaxAir Technical Team, the MaxAir Technical Team pending time and availability, or you may hire a local landscape architect or general contractor with whom the MaxAir Technical Team will advise.

When deciding the location of the trampoline, what should I be considering?

For outdoors, a leveled area and a shady location are best spaces as opposed to locations that are hilly or in direct sunlight. Make sure there are no obstacles above the area, such as power lines and tree limbs. Please refer to our installation guides to make sure you have enough space for an in-ground trampoline requiring a pit-set foundation, retaining wall, and/or drainage.

For indoors, the height requirements vary depending on the size of the trampoline. Please reach out to us with your space’s measurements & we’ll go over size options with you.

How are the trampoline sizes defined?

Our trampolines are defined by the size of the bouncing surface, also known as the mat or bed. Please be aware the outside perimeter will be larger depending on the spring padding you select.
